I went out to the Royals game tonight, having bought a ticket online last night, as the game was sold out today. The Kansas City Sky Show is a new event that’s planned to happen every June on a Friday night at Kauffman Stadium. Yes, the fireworks were well done, although they weren’t as jaw-droppingly, insanely, brazenly over-the-top as we were all coerced into believing they would be.
Also, I feel like complaining. I find this infernal Kansas City inferiority complex to be embarrassing. Between the fireworks renditions tonight there were brief clips shown, meant to hype up what a super-duper awesome crossroads of the universe Kansas City is. Yes, here in good ole’ KC we’ve never been really too sure if we qualify as a “real” city or not, so it is now inevitable that at public events such as these, we have to be spoon-fed reassurances that we matter. “Oh, Wassail! We have tall buildings and professional sports teams! In your face Omaha and Des Moines!”
I’ve heard people say that Kansas City is a small big city and that Kansas City is a huge small town. Whatever it is, I just wish it would act more sure of itself. But enough of my complaining for one night - I think I dig a few of the photos I got tonight, so I’m happy.
