Among the scenes from Washington Avenue in downtown St. Louis is a largely intact streetwall - which is a street lined with buildings on both sides, uninterrupted by parking lots, where the height of the buildings is tied into the width of the street - creating the feel of an “outdoor room.” It is usually this manner of urban design that makes the typical person take notice of the good physical aspects of the city. In Washington Avenue’s instance, a great many of the buildings have been converted to residential use, creating something off a “loft district.”
